Basic Tactics for Airsoft
In airsoft we mimic the tactics of the military and SWAT Teams, in order to accomplish a certain objective. Tactics such as room clearing, using proper cover, fire and maneuver, and 360 awareness. These tactics have been in use and taught since World War Two, we as airsofters use these same tactics depending on the game and objective. Now lets break each tactic from a fundamental stand point.
AirSoft Room Clearing
When clearing a room in airsoft, check high, low, corners, crawl spaces, and other rooms in the complex. Searching high and low is making sure that there aren't any trip wires, opponents laying on the ground or in an elevated position. Corners is where most players get out clearing a building, they don't bother to check to see if the enemy is hiding in that corner. A corner is the most obvious spot to pick the opposing players off as they are moving through. After clearing high, low, and any corners, clear the crawl spaces (if there are any). A crawl space is a tiny opening that a person (depending on their size) can fit themselves and their gear into. A player in a crawl space can pick off almost an entire unit of players clearing a room by themselves. Checking crawl spaces can prevent the entire unit from being eliminated. When coming up on an opening, make sure you are about a foot away form the wall so that you have room to maneuver your weapon more easily if fired upon. Having this foot distance between you and the wall prevents you from ricochets and gives you more room to move around for cover or peep the corner.
Proper Cover Usage
Ducking behind a wall, embankment, into a ditch or trench, or any form of cover you can find on the battlefield can keep in the game. It can hopefully get you into a better firing position or vantage point. Cover can buy you time to reload, make a plan of attack or defense, or catching you breathe for a second. So how do you use cover properly? So based off of how the battlefield is set up, the cover usage well be different. Coming up to cover is as simple a sliding behind it, running up to it, crawling, or way of moving towards that particular piece of cover. Do not stick you head above or around the cover immediately after ducking behind it, because you will give away your position and will be an easy target for snipers (if there are any). Cover can give an excellent to get a steady bead on the opposing force and be able to take them out.
Fire and Maneuver
Fire and maneuver is what some people call leap frogging or bunny hopping to a covered position or trying to advance forward as a smaller target. I call it leap frogging when I play and that was the terminology used when I first learned this tactic. So fire and maneuver is when two or more players take turns providing cover fire so that his/her teammate(s) can advance. When leap frogging move in a straight line, you and your partner(s) decide on a route and landmarks so that you can advance effectively. For instance, you and your unit are trying to advance forward and don't want to run for and risk getting hit. You decide to fire and maneuver, you see a grave of trees about fifty yards forward your position, then there is ditch about thirty yards forward of that tree grove, then lets say sixty yards forward of that ditch is your objective. So how do you go about moving this distance by leap frogging, your unit provides cover while one at a time moving forward to that position, each remaining person provides cover for the teammate moving forward. As for the players already at the position, they provide forward facing cover for the advancing player and to hold the position. One by one you and your unit are individually moving forward bit by bit strategically.
Keeping 360 Awareness
Keeping 360 awareness or keeping your head on a swivel means you are always looking around and checking your surroundings. When playing indoors or outdoors, always keep your head on a swivel. There's nothing else to it, it's pretty simple to get the hang of.
